Mulliken, MI Train Wreck, June 1908
ENGINEER IVES BADLY HURT.
RECEIVED SERIOUS INJURIES IN RAILROAD WRECK ON PERE MARQUETTE.
RUNS INTO OPEN SWITCH AND ENGINE IS OVERTURNED IN A MUD DITCH -- INTERNALLY INJURED AND IN CRITICAL CONDITION.
Mulliken, Mich. -- The morning papers contain dispatches of a railroad wreck on the Pere Marquette at Mulliken, Tuesday afternoon, caused by the Grand Rapids flyer running into an open switch, running its entire length and plunging into a mud ditch beyond. The front of the engine was imbedded entirely in the bank and the first car rolled over on its side.
The train was in charge of Engineer FRED IVES, a brother of Mrs. Hamilton W. Hewitt of this city. As Mrs. Hewitt has not yet been personally advised of the accident, it is not apprehended that he is seriously hurt although he is reported to have three ribs broken and to be internally injured.
He was taken to a private residence at Mulliken.
MR. IVES is about fifty years old and was born in this city. He has railroaded ever since he left Marshall thirty years ago, and his father Herbert Ives was an engineer before him, losing his life in an accident at Knoxville, Tenn., while running a government train during the war, leaving three small children, a son and two daughtes. MR. IVES' other sister is Mrs. C. A. Cosier of Homer.

Special Dispatch to the Marshall News.
Detroit, June 3, 2:00 p.m. -- Engineer IVES, injured in that Pere Marquette at Mulliken last evening, is in a critical condition. The engine completely overturned when it ran into the open switch. The other eleven injured are doing well. The blame seems to lay on the crew of the freight train which had just left the tracks.
