Port Huron, MI grain elevator fire, Nov 1901
GRAIN ELEVATORS BURN.
Nearly 300,000 Bushels of Grain Destroyed at Port Huron - Loss, $300,000.
PORT HURON, Mich., Nov. 4. - Fire to-night destroyed two large adjoining grain elevators owned by the Botsford Elevator Company here, entailing a loss of $300,000. There were 171,000 bushels of wheat, 90,000 bushels of corn, and 14,000 bushels of oats in the buildings, and the grain was all destroyed. The loss on the buildings is estimated at $125,000, with $62,000 insurance, and the loss on the grain $175,000. The grain was fully insured.
The steamer Spokane from Chicago was unloading grain when the fire started, and was only saved by heroic efforts of her crew. One residence near by was also burned. The elevators were to have been used as one of the storage points in the projected through grain route of the Grand Trunk Railroad system, from Duluth, Minn., to Leith, Scotland.
J. E. Botsford stated that the loss of these elevators would not hinder the project, as a million-bushedl elevator would be constructed at Point Edward, Ontario. The burned elevators will probably not be re-built.
