Springfield, MA Amherst College Fire, Oct 1883

A FIRE AT AMHERST COLLEGE.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 30---The octagon building of Amherst College, in which are the Lawrence Observatory and Wood's Cabinet, narrowly escaped being destroyed by fire this morning. The students by energetic work quenched the flames, and the damage to the building is trifling. The mineral collection was considerably damaged by careless handling.
