Milford, MA Block Fire, Mar 1890

A BIG FIRE AT MILFORD.

MILFORD, Mass., March 18.---A great fire is raging here. It started about 7 o'clock from a chimney in Sweeney's meat market, 73 Main-street, in a block owned by Mrs. M. Raftery and occupied by numerous tenants.

Aid has been summoned from neighboring towns. Among the losses so far to occupants of the Raftery Block are the following: James Thom, boots and shoes, $6,000 to $8,000; insured. Hixon Brothers, furniture, $10,000 to $12,000; M. Sweeney, meat market, $1,500 to $2,000; on buildings, $15,000. In Union Block Pierce & Wood, grocers, $7,000; T. Macuen, confectioner, $1,500. The block is owned by C. R. Scott.

LOSSES BY FIRE.

The Union Block at Milford, Mass., which was damaged by fire Tuesday night is owned by C. R. Scott, and there is $4,500 insurance on it. The occupants, Pierce & Wood, grocers, and A. T. McCuen, confectioner, carry an insurance of $5,000. The Tremont Block, owned by Rafferty and Coon, was valued at $10,000, and is a total loss. The insurance on it is $6,000. The grocery store of James Thoms, who suffers badly, is insured for $3,500. Hixon Brothers, furniture dealers, lose $10,000. They carried $8,200 insurance. The Henry M. Taft two-story frame block was completely destroyed. The loss of $5,000, and there is $4,000 insurance. The loss of James F. Stratton, liquors and cigars, is not known. His property was insured for $2,000. The Flatiron Building, owned by C. R. Scott, was damaged to the extent of $1,000. The loss is covered by insurance.
