North Adams, MA House Fire, Oct 1898
FIREMEN THROWN TO GROUND.
Ladder Broke, and Chief Byars and John Bassion Took a Fall.
Chief Byars and Fireman John Bassion were thrown to the ground by the breaking of a ladder at a fire on East Brooklyn street last evening . Both were shaken up considerably, but were not seriously hurt. The fire was at the house of John Armstrong, and when the chief and chemical arrived, the flames were coming through the roof. The fire ladders had not arrived and so and old ladder that was near the house was taken into service. The chief and Mr Bassion were near the top of this, about 20 feet from the ground, when it suddenly broke. Bassion had time to jump, but the chief was handling some of the apparatus, and fell straight.
It was thought at first that they were badly hurt, and Dr. Stafford was called, but they were soon on their feet again. Bassion's wrist was sprained slightly, but aside from this and the shock, neither was injured.
The fire was confined to the back of house, starting from the pantry, and following up the rear wall. It was extinguished with the chemical only, and the damage was slight. The cause is unknown.
