South Hadley, MA Dormitory Fire, Dec 1922
MOUNT HOLYOKE FIRE DESTROYS DORMITORY.
$200,000 BUILDING GIVEN BY ROCKEFELLER BURNS WITH GIRLS' BELONGINGS.
South Hadley, Mass., Dec. 21. -- Twenty Mount Holyoke College students lost practically all of their belongings today in a fire which destroyed Rockefeller Hall, a dormitory given by JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER, that cost $200,000. Workmen from a nearby construction job helped many girls to rescue their effects, cutting down the loss. The lost articles were mostly in trunks piled in the basement, preparatory to the students' departure for the Christmas recess.
The ninety girls who live in the dormitory were in chapel when the fire was discovered in a pile of rubbish. They hurried back and saved many packed suitcases, but could not rescue the trunks.
Low water pressure hampered the local fire department, which was aided by two companies from Holyoke. The origin of the fire is unknown.
EDWIN N. WHITE of Holyoke, a trustee of the college, has offered loans to those girls who lost all their belongings.
