A Cadet Drowned.

Annapolis, Md., June 13.---A wireless message was received at the naval academy tonight from Commander C. J. Badger commanding the U. S. S. Newark, conveying news of the death by drowning of Midshipman L. L. Vertrees of the second class. The Newark is one of the vessels now engaged in the army-navy joint exercises and was at anchor off Hackett's point this afternoon when Young Vertress, with a number of other midshipmen, was in swimming. Young Vertrees was 19 years old and a son of W. J. Vertrees of Bushnell, Ill.

Perished While Swimming from Cruiser Newark, Near Annapolis.

ANNAPOLIS, June 13.---Midshipman Louis L. Vertrees of Bushnell, Ill., a member of the third class, was drowned this afternoon while swimming from the cruiser Newark, upon which he was stationed, off Hackett's Point, about seven miles above Annapolis.

The information was conveyed to the Naval Academy by wireless telegraph, the only other detail being that efforts were being made to recover the body. Vertrees was twenty-one years of age.

The Newark is participating in the army and navy exercises in the Chesapeake Bay.
