Takoma Park, MD Bridge Collapse Kills Three, Jan 1932

Debris Of Bridge

BRIDGE FALLS; THREE DIE.

TWO MT. AIRY WORKMEN ESCAPE DEATH AT TACOMA PARK.

Three lives were taken in a bridge collapse Tuesday afternoon at Takoma Park, Montgomery county, in an accident which bore some resemblance to the Frederick Junction bridge collapse of eighteen months ago, in which three workmen were killed. The victims Tuesday afternoon were GUY L. COWPERTHWAIT, Elkton, foreman of the wrecking crew, and EDWARD T. TRACEY, Takoma Park, both of whom died instantly, and HAROLD DAVIS, colored of Media, Pa., who died in Washington Sanitarium a short time later.
EDWARD DOTSON, colored, Mt. Airy, was one of three workmen who escaped as the bridge fell, burying their companions under tons of concrete. The structure was a portion of the Sligo bridge which was being demolished. The crew was cutting away supports, which buckled before the three victims could flee the scene. Another of the workmen was WELLINGTON ROSE, colored, Mt. Airy.
