Baltimore, MD Fire, Aug 1883

LARGE FIRE IN BALTIMORE.

DESTRUCTION OF A TINWARE FACTORY AND SEVERAL OTHER BUILDINGS.

BALTIMORE, Aug. 8.---A fire this afternoon destroyed the large tinware factory of Matthai, Ingram & Co., at Lexington and Arch streets, together with all the machinery and stock. The fire originated from a gasoline fire-pot used by one of the solderers, and spread with such rapidity that nothing whatever was saved. The hands employed had barely time to escape. The firemen were prompt and early at the fire, but could do nothing except protect adjacent houses. The building of Matthai, Ingram & Co., was 70 by 120 feet, three stories high, and valued at $20,000, upon which there was an insurance of $12,000, was destroyed. The fire spread westward and destroyed the roofs and back buildings of two large three-story houses in Lexington street belonging to the Carson estate. A house belonging to Jacob Ross was damaged, one belonging to Mrs. Sarah Mallon and one to John S. Hogg, all of which are covered by insurance. In Montgomery street, on the north, 14 small two-story houses were damaged. On the east, four houses in Arch street had their roofs destroyed and the upper part of one was crushed by the falling wall of the burned building. By the destruction of the factory 300 hands are thrown out of employment. The total insurance is $41,050.
