FATALLY BURNED

Carl Altman, 25 year old Home, Pa., resident was burned to death in the cab of a wrecked truck he was driving near Elliot City,[sic] Md., Tuesday night of last week, when the truck was forced from the road and struck a pole, bursting into flames.

Motorists stopped and dragged Lyle Short, 25, also of Home, from the cab as flames began to lick about it. Short's feet were burned. The rescuers, unable to free Altman, called Elliot City [sic] firemen but he was dead when the fire was extinguished.

Short said Altman had been in a civilian conservation corps camp until a few weeks ago when be[sic] left to work with Short hauling fertilizer.

Funeral Director Ben Thomas, of Marion Center, brought the body home.

Altman, son of Harry Altman, farmer of near Home, is survived by his parents, two brothers, Lloyd and Max, and one sister, Miss Florence Altman.

Word of his death came as a severe blow to the members of the Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Shelocta where Altman had served from July 22, 1935 until last September 1.

First Lieutenant William J. Morgan, in command of the camp, said that Altman had an excellent service record and had been very popular at camp. Acknowledged one of the best truck drivers, Altman had won promotion to the post of assistant leader. He resigned to take the position which terminated so tragically.
