By Publishers' Press.
Baltimore, Md., June 13 - A fire of unknown origin burned the Savannah steamship wharf of the Merchants & Miners Transportation Co., this morning, with a number of barges laden with valuable cargoes.

Great losses were sustained aggregating two million dollars and for a time it appeared that the city was to experience another sweeping conflagration.

Three members of the crew of the steamer Essex met death on their vessel, which with the cargo, was destroyed, causing a loss of half a million. Their names are EDWARD ATKINSON, JOHN COSTELLE and MANUEL ODELLE, of Baltimore. Five others were rescued with great difficulty by the tug Mary, two of them narrowly escaped death by drowning, while the other three were scorched.

They were forced to make flying leaps to the rescuing deck from the burning Essex.

The fire occurred at 1:30 o'clock this morning.
