Martinsburg, MD Storm and Railroad Accident, Mar 1909

STORM HARD ON RAILROAD MEN

Conductor R. S. Gordon is Blown From Bridge.

Bureau of the Evening Times.

181 Virginia Avenue.

South Cumberland, March 5.

Robert S. Gordon, night yardmaster at Cumbo yards, near Martinsburg, and widely known among B. & O. railroad men in this city, had a narrow escape from death yesterday morning at 7 o'clock, while en route home from his work, when in crossing the Cumberland Valley railroad bridge over the B. & O., he was caught in the teeth of a terrific gale and hurled from the bridge by the force of the wind into Tuscarora creek, a distance of about 25 feet.

He was rendered unconscious by the fall, and would have been drowned but for the timely arrival of two railroad men, who witnessed the accident and hastened to his assistance.

He was taken from the water in an unconscious condition and helped to his home. An examination of his injuries showed an ugly gash upon his forehead and a badly sprained back. No bones were broken, but it is probable that he is injured internally, although this will not be definitely determined for several days.
