Destruction of a Furniture Factory in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, Md., Aug 27.---Shortly after 1 o'clock a fire was discovered in the extensive furniture manufactory of Charles P. Steven, corner of High and Low streets. Notwithstanding the efforts of the firemen, the flames continued to gain headway, and the entire Fire Department was called out. But was impossible to save the building, and the prevention of the spreading of the fire to the surrounding property, and it did not extend beyond Steven's factory, which was entirely consumed, with nearly all the contents. The loss cannot be stated, as the owner is absent from the city, but it will exceed the amount of the insurance, which is $25,000 on the building and machinery, and $20,000 on the stock in the following companies: Merchants', of Hartford, $1.000; Commonwealth, of New-York, $15,000; Putman, of Hartford, $1,000; City Fire, of Hartford, $1,250; Home, of New-Haven, $8,000, and the remainder in home companies.
