Emmitsburg, MD Automobiles Collide, Oct 1965

SPEED BLAMED FOR COUNTY'S WORST CRASH.

The death toll in Frederick County's worst highway disaster rose to nine today with the death of another Mount St. Mary's College student.
DANIEL J. METZGER, 18, of HiNella, N.J., became the ninth victim of a two-car auto collision early Saturday on U.S. 15 near Emmitsburg, when he died at a Gettysburg Hospital. Seven of those killed were students at the Emmetsburg college.
The lone survivor of the crash, DENNIS M. ROMAN of Rahway, N.J., another student, remains in critical condition at the Annie Warner Hospital in Gettysburg.
Dead at the scene were FRANK CUNNINGHAM, 19, of Newark, N.J.; JOHN L. BROWN, 18, of Ashland, N.J.; FRED CHRISTANSEN, 17, of Irvington, N.J.; BRUCE T. CONSIDINE, of Glen Cove, N.Y.; and WILLIAM J. McCARTHY, 18, of Williston Park, N.Y.
JOHN WILLIAM MARSH, his wife BARBARA, 40 of Carlisle and WILLIAM G. BONISH, 18, of Bendersville, Pa., died at the hospital.
The accident brought the state's traffic death toll for the year to 570, 119 ahead of the number killed at this date last year.
All of the students, attempting to make their midnight curfew, were riding in a car driven by CUNNINGHAM. State police said CUNNINGHAM'S 1959 car, southbound on U.S. 15, crossed the center line and swerved to return to the proper lane.
It was hit on the left front door post by a car driven by MARSH, 46. MARSH'S car was southbound in the proper lane, police said. Both cars were demolished.
Police said the accident occurred Saturday at 12:15 a.m., one mile east of Emmitsburg and 3-10ths of a mile north of the Md. 97 intersection. This intersection has been the scene of several fatal collisions this year. Ambulances from Emmitsburg, Thurmont and Gettysburg were dispatched to the scene of the accident.
A spokesman for the Peters Funeral Home in Gettysburg, which is temporarily handling the MARSH funeral arrangements, said that they were apparently returning home at the time of the accident.
The MARSHS owned a farm in Carlisle and have a 13-year-old daughter, the spokesman said.
The Rev. Robert Wharton dean of freshmen, said that funeral services for BONISH will be held Tuesday morning in Gerrysburg. Services for CHRISTIANSEN, CONSIDINE and McCARTHY are scheduled for Wednesday morning in their hometowns.
The eight boys were returning from a movie in Gettysburg to drop a freshman boy off at the college in time to make his midnight curfew.
The crash was termed "the worst single automobile accident in the history of Frederick county" by Lt. Samuel R. Dorsey, commander of the local state police barracks.
State Police headquarters at Pikesville said the crash was the worst in Maryland in the last eight years, and possibly the worst in the history of the state.
