DAMAGING BLAZE HITS ELKTON, MD.
Elkton, Md. (UP) -- A flash fire swept through a block of Elkton's business section Saturday, destroying several stores and two small hotels.
Police said guests in both hotels were evacuated safely. Three firemen were overcome by smoke and a fourth suffered head injuries when he fell on icy pavement.
Fire companies from 12 communities within a 30-mile radius, including units from Wilmington, Del., and Oxford, Pa., helped combat the flames.
The fire broke out at about 5:30 a.m. in the basement of a shoe store. It spread swiftly, gutting the Ritz and New Central hotels, and grocery store. A motion picture theater and other buildings were damaged.
Cause of the fire was not determined immediately. Damage was estimated unofficially at $750,000.
