Shaft, MD Trolley Car Accident, Jul 1905

Crushed to Death by Trolley Car.

Cumberland, Md., July 11.---George Pippen, aged fifty-seven years, a veteran miner of this region, who resided at Shaft and was employed at Hoffman Mine, was killed to-day by a car of the Cumberland and Westernport Electric Railway in front of his home and in view of his wife and several of his children. He had left home to go to a store, and his attention was attracted by the passing of a coal train and he failed to heed the approach of the trolley, which had sounded the danger whistle. Just as the car was about to pass him he stepped in front of it and was crushed to death.
