Swan's Island, ME Library Fire, Jul 2008

The Swan's Island Library was consumed by a ball of flame early Thursday morning, July 24, 2008, most likely the victim of a lightning strike during a thunderstorm. The Old Atlantic Schoolhouse, owned by the Swan's Island Educational Society, housed not only thousands of books, but also artifacts from the island's historical museum, including genealogy records and hundreds of historic photographs, all of which are destroyed. Debris from the 4a.m. fire was seen as much half a mile away.
