OUTING FATAL TO SEVEN

Six Women and One Man Drown When Sloop Capsizes.

Only Three of Ten Prominent Summer Tourists Rescued in Penobscot Bay Tragedy.

Deer Isle, Me., -- Six women and a man, all summer resorters here, lost their lives when a thirty-five-foot sloop was thrown on its beam ends by a sudden squall in Penobscot Bay. Three men succeeded in climbing into the dinghy that was being towed by the sloop, but they were almost overcome by exhaustion in battling against the growing seas when picked up by a fishing tug.
The disaster was witnessed on the shore by about 1000 persons from hotels and cottages. A dozen sloops put out to the rescue, but the wreck had floated a quarter mile to leeward before they reached it. By that time the fishing tug had the rescued men ashore and two bodies had been recovered.
The dead are:
MRS. LUCY S. CRAWLEY, wife of Professor Edwin S. Crawley, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.
ALICE and ELEANOR PAIRO, sisters, Washington.
EVELYN and LUTIE KELLOGG, sisters, Baltimore.
MISS ELIZABETH G. EVANS, of Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts, and
JASON C. HUTCHINGS, of Billerica, Mass., a student in the Bangor Theological Seminary, and who had been filling a pulpit in Sunset, Deer Isle, for the summer.
Professor CRAWLEY, HENRY B. EVANS, brother of MISS ELIZABETH EVANS, and Captain HASKELL, skipper of the sloop, were the men to save themselves by reaching the dinghy. HASKELL had a reputation as one of the most skillful yachtsmen on Deer Isle.
