FIRE SWEEPING A MAINE TOWN.

Appeal for Help Is Sent to Rockland from Waldborough.

ROCKLAND, Me., March 8.--A message was received here just before midnight last night from Waldborough announcing that a fire which threatened to destroy the entire town was in progress, and asking that an engine be sent there immediately.

It was stated that the fire started in the Welt Shipyard, where a large five-masted schooner for the Palmer fleet is being constructed, and, getting beyond the control of the local department, started on a destructive sweep through the town.

A special train was made up here and an engine was started for the scene of the conflagration at 12:10 o'clock this morning.
