Pineville, LA Tornado Strikes Town, Apr 1923

SOUTH HIT BY TORNADO.

FOURTEEN KILLED, FIFTY INJURED IN PINEVILLE, LOUISIANA.

New Orleans, La., April 5. -- Following in the wake of an unprecedated precipitation, a tornado early last night struck the town of Pineville, La., separated from Alexandria by Red river, killing fourteen persons, injuring at least fifty others and laying waste to everything within its path of several hundred yards in width.
Many of the injured were negroes who were taken to the United States veterans hospital near Pineville.

Fear More Casualties.
All of those killed were residents of Pineville and a nearby sawmill settlement. No news has been received early today from Boyce and Goodpine, near Alexandria, reported last night to have been in the path of the tornado. Wire communication with the two towns was still interrupted.
Torrential rains, hail storms, swollen streams, interrupted train service and floods were reported from a number of points in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Alexandria, La., April 5. -- The death toll as a result of the tornado which late yesterday swept Alexandria and Pineville, a town across the Red river from this city, was placed this morning at 20, according to a check by the authorities.
The list of injured was placed at 60, more than thirty of whom are in the United States Veterans Hospital near Pineville.
The property damage was placed at $500,000.
