Lake Charles, LA Flood, Sept 1913

FLOOD CREST MAY BE REACHED WEDNESDAY

Three-Foot Rise Expected in Next 24 Hours---Lake Charles Submerged.

By Associated Press.

LAKE CHARLES, La., Sept. 29.---It is conservatively estimated by old river men that the Cal[illegible] will rise three feet more within the next twenty-four hours. It is said the crest of the high water should be felt here by tomorrow noon, though many are inclined to think the high stage will not be reached for two days.

Most of the wholesale district is under water. All of the saw mills along the river were well under water today. Many of the houses on South Ryan street, others on Moss street and several on Railroad avenue are under water.

All train service had been stopped with the exception of Southern Pacific eastbound trains. The Kansas City Southern, the Iron Mountain, the Lake Charles & Northern and all branches of these roads have suspended operations indefinitely. The Southern Pacific cannot operate farther than Lake Charles as the trestle between this city and that place is now well under water. The Southern Pacific is arranging to run trains as far east as Westlake and transfer by ferry.
