Youth, Hurt When Auto Hits Truck, Dies In Hospital
Elmore Rivet, Madisonville, Is 38th Motor Accident Victim of Year
Elmore Rivet, 22 years old, Madisonville, La., one of 15 persons injured Thursday night in a double accident on Gentilly Road neat the Danziger bridge over the Industrial canal caused when the car in which he was riding struck a truck, died at 5:23 p.m. Saturday in Charity hospital.
His death brings to 38 the total of automobile fatalities in New Orleans since January 1. It was the result of hemorrhage and shock following the fracture of two ribs and the right side of his skull, according to an autopsy by Dr. Robert H. Potts, assistant coroner.
Rivet was a passenger in a car driven by Horace G. Davis, 26, Pearlington, Miss., which piled into the rear of a truck containing 11 negroes, driven by Sidney Mansion, negro, 26, 1728 North Robertson street. Both vehicles were preceding toward Slidell.
Although denied by the negroes, Davis charged that the truck’s tail light was not on. Police reported that when they arrived the light had been knocked off the truck.
No Charges Filed
No charges had been filed Saturday in connection with the collision. Police asserted after Rivet’s death that they will consult the district attorney’s office on it Monday.
Several passenger cars and trucks without taillights have figured in automobile accidents recently in New Orleans and vicinity.
Davis, driver of the car in which Rivet was injured fatally, said that he was proceeding at a “fair speed” when Rivet cried out that a truck was in front of his car was caught under the rear of the truck and overturned. He received an injury to his left shoulder.
Eight of the negroes in the truck were injured, none seriously. Four other persons were hurt as they stood in the highway surveying the wreckage. They were Mr. and Mrs. Irving A. Douglas, 2438 Havana street, and their two children.
According to police, they were struck by a car driven by Felix Simon, 42, of North Shore, La., who was booked at the Fifth Precinct police station with reckless driving, causing damage and injury. A passenger in his car, Louis Malter, 47, 1878 North Galvez street, received lacerations of the face and left hand.

Funeral services for Elmore Rivet will be held from the funeral home of Lamana, Panno and Fallo, Inc., 625 North Rampart street. Time had not been announced Saturday night. He is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Rivet, a brother, Allen, and a sister, Elma. He was a native of Donaldsonville, La.
