Louisville, April 25, 1859
TERRIBLE STEAMBOAT DISASTER ON THE MISSISSIPPI

The St. Nicholas was on her way from St. Louis to New Orleans, and the explosion took place near Island Sixty, at ten o'clock on Sunday night. The boat and cargo are a total loss. The whole number of persons killed is not yet known, but the following are either dead or missing:
CAPT. McMULLEN, of the boat; MRS. GLINE, the Clerk's wife; MRS. DUNICAN, clerk's cousin; MISS McKNIGHT; MRS. CHRISTOPHER; an unknown lady with a babe; WILLIAM FAULKNER, of McGregor's Landing, Iowa; another unknown lady; JOHN JENKINS, second engineer; WILLIAM TEW, first engineer; JOHN BOND, cabin boy; JAMES WOOD, first cook, of Hillsboro City, Penn.; the barber; thirteen deck hands and firemen; the pastry cook, name not given; JOSEPH _____, the pantryman; MISS JACKSON, a chambermaid, of St. Louis; five slave women; an unknown gentleman, of Baton Rouge; EDWARD STEPHENS, pilot, of St. Louis; JOHN LIMBECK, fireman.
The following are badly scalded:
BENJAMIN V. GLINE, first clerk, of St. Louis, a native of Portland, Conn.; J. S. ACUIT, of Warrenton, Miss.; JACOB LANGHAM, of Pittsburg; R. J. STUART, of Staunton, Va.; THOMAS CARTER, of Tamaqua, Schuylkill, Pa.; ELLA KENNEDEY, of Brunswick, Mo.; ROSE ST. JOHN, of New Orleans, Chambermaid; WILLIAM PENNIBAKER, of St. Louis, watchman; FREDERICK MILLER; GEORGE McINGLE; ANDY SLICK, fireman; D. KAPPS, of Farmington, Ill.; O. W. REYNOLDS, of Sioux city.
The following are only slightly scalded:
H. H. CULLAM, second clerk of the boat, of Portland, Conn.; JOSEPH WOLF; JOHN McALPIN, bar-keeper, of St. Louis.
The following persons escaped injury:

LEONARD, second steersman; JOHN CERRIS; GEORGE W. CHRISTOPHER; BOYLE TRAVERS; MR. MURDOCK; G. W. JENNINGS; JACOB WAGNER; WILLIAM MILLER; MARY A BRUN; MARY J. DONAHUE; P. C. About fifty of those who were uninjured arrived here today to the Susquehanna, together with sixteen who are shockingly scalded.
The sufferers are under the care of the city authorities and several benevolent societies.
