Keithsville, LA Train Collision Kills Famous Horse, Jan 1902
HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE AND PROPERTY IN SOUTHERN WRECK.
Shreveport, La., Jan. 1 -- A Keithsville, La., special says two lives were lost, one person seriously injured and the race horse, GEORGE ARNOLD, for which $20,000 had been refused, was killed in a disastrous collision between Texas Pacific fast freight No. 67 and a Houston East & West Texas freight on the siding at this place at 4 o'clock this morning.
The dead:
W. J. DANIELS, Houston, Texas, fireman.
JAMES KANE, stable attendant.
Injured:
BOB EDWARDS, negro fireman, both legs broken and severe internal injuries.
Twelve cars of the Houston East & West Texas train were burned to the trucks. W. J. DANIELS, the fireman, who was killed, was either crushed or burned to death under the wreckage. BOB EDWARDS, another fireman, sustained his injuries by jumping from his cab. The engineer of the Houston East & West Texas train, who is said to have been NEWT DENTON, disappeared immediately after the accident.
One car contained four race horses belonging to J. W. FULLER, of Wills Point, Texas, which were enroute from the winter meeting at New Orleans. GEORGE ARNOLD, the only one killed, won the Christmas handicap, the premier stake at New Orleans. The horse was insured for $9,000. Three other horses in the car were not injured and escaped to the woods. JAMES KANE, who was killed, was traveling with these horses.
