Minden, La., Fire Sunday Causes $250,000 Damage

Aid From Shreveport and Other Cities Saves Business Section

Special to The News.

Minden, La., Feb. 26.-Damage estimated at between $250,000 and $300,000 was caused early Sunday morning by fire of undetermined origin which began in the Crystal Café here and spread to several other places of business, reducing to ashes a half block of commercial properties.

No lives were lost but Fire Chief Ben Turner and Fireman Sam Life and Bert David, all of the Minden fire department, were overheated while fighting the stubborn blaze, which threatened destruction of the entire business area and would have caused more heavier damage had it not been for assistance given by the fire departments of Shreveport, thirty miles west of here, and Homer and Gibsland, neighboring towns.

The fire, which w=started at 2:15 a.m., was not extinguished until about daylight.

The following business places were destroyed: J. B. Flewellen’s gents’ furnishing store, Bostonian’s Crystal Café, Mrs. Mollie David’s ready-to-wear store, Whiteway Barber shop and Beauty Shop, owned by W. T. Sumner; Minden Hardware Company, owned by group headed by H. J. Heffner; Mrs. Herman’s City Shoe Chop, and Scout Theater, owned by Rollin Williams, The City Drug Store, owned by Rollin Williams was partially destroyed and damage was done to the Piggly Wiggly store.

The buildings were owned mainly by Tom Crichton, W. R. Fogel and the Minden Hardware Company. Most of the losses were insured.
