Wilmore, KY Dormitory Fire At College, Apr 1924

DORMITORY DESTROYED AT ASBURY COLLEGE.
Wilmore, Ky. -- MR. and MRS. J. P. SMITH, of Seventeenth street, Portsmouth, received a telephone message from their daughter MISS DOROTHY SMITH, who is a student at Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky., near Danville, stating that she had lost all her clothing and many of her fine paintings in a fire which destroyed the girls' dormitory, known as the Mary Crawford Hall, yesterday. The fire started in the furnace room of the college and the three story frame building was ablaze before the five hundred girls could get their belongings out. The loss is estimated at $300,000.
The village of Wilmore is without a water system and the fire department was unable to make headway against the fire, and the town was withing a radius of 25 miles to send for help. A terrific gale was blowing and the other college buildings were threatened.
