Ohio County, KY Miner Throws Blasting Powder on House Fire, Dec 1893
A Kentucky Miner Throws Powder on the Fire in His House.
Riley Hughes, a miner of Taylor's mines, Ohio county, Ky., threw a wet lump of blasting powder on the fire at his home Wednesday. It exploded, and the fire communicated to a 24-pound can of powder. A terrific explosion followed, blowing the house to atoms. Hughes, his wife and five children were shockingly burned and mangled. Mrs. Hughes and her daughter Sarah died in a few hours. The others, it is thought, will recover. The explosion was of such force that the people for some distance around thought it was an earthquake.
