Train-Car Crash Kills Five Children

5 Children Churchgoers

Brandenburg, Ky. (AP) – Five children were killed and three persons injured critically yesterday when their car collided with a freight train at a crossing about ten miles south of here.

State Trooper JAMES McRAE said a car driven by MRS. ARTIE HAYNES, 29, of Guston, apparently on her way to church, drove into the path of a Louisville and Nashville freight train at Ekron.

McRAE said the engineer, W. R. POPE of Shepherdsville, saw the car and thought it was going to stop. POPE, who estimated he was going 40-50 miles per hour, said the car continued slowly along Ky. 144.
The car was dragged about 100 feet and all but one of its eight occupants were thrown out, McRAE said.

Dead were two of MRS. HAYNES' children, MARTHA, 6, and JANET, 2, and three of her nieces, NOLA MARY FLACKER, 6, DONNA JO FLACKER, 1, and KAREN SUE, 6 months.

MRS. HAYNES and her two sons, HERBIE, 7, and GEORGE, 4, were hospitalized in critical condition.

Brandenburg is is[sic] Meade County on the Ohio River about 40 miles from Louisville.

remember that day well

My mother was driving the car, Martha and Janet were my sisters and Herb and George were my brothers. George was in another wreck in Jan 1980 in Corydon, IN. He was transferred to Suburban Hospital in Louisville and had seven major surgeries, two of those were legs amputated. George passed away March 1, 1980.
