Shepherdsville, KY Many Die In Train Wreck, Dec 1917

BARDSTOWN A CITY OF MOURNING.

SCARCELY A HOME LEFT UNTOUCHED; THREE CASKETS IN ONE FAMILY.

Bardstown, Dec. 22 -- Business was suspended here today and Christmas activities stopped on request of Mayor SICO, while the funerals of some of the victims of Thursday's Louisville and Nashville railroad wreck at Sheperdsville were held. Arrangements for others have been made and there will be a large number of funerals tomorrow.
There is scarcely a home left untouched in some manner by woe. Sixteen caskets in ten homes grimly tell the story. In the pretentious residence of NAT W. MUIR, Bardstown banker, and prominent citizen are three caskets containing the bodies of himself, wife and son of seventeen. At the home of RADFORD C. CHERRY, SR., county attorney of Nelson county, are father, mother and son of eleven. There are eight other homes in which one and sometimes two members of a family lost their lives.
The first of three independent investigations as to the causes leading to the Shepherdsville wreck was begun here today by Superintendent SHERIDAN of the Louisville division. It was attended by representatives of the Interstate Commerce Commission and is held behind closed doors. The Bullitt county grand jury and the State Railroad COmmission will also begin investigation within two weeks.
