Newport, KY Collapse Of Building, Oct 1963
MAN BURIED IN COLLAPSE OF BUILDING.
Newport, Ky. (UPI) -- Five men were injured and another "buried under tons of rubble" Saturday when the wall of a three story brick building collapsed during a demolition operation.
The search for the trapped worker was halted less than 30 minutes after the accident because police feared other walls would give way. They called for a crane before continuing the rescue operation.
Officials reported no details, but the Campbell County coroner's office said it had been asked to send a man to the scene.
The building is located at the southeast corner of Fourth and Columbia Streets in downtown Newport. Police said the men were working on the second floor and roof of the structure when it collapsed.
Those injured, all employed by the King Wrecking Co., Cincinnati, were rushed to Booth Hospital, Covington, Ky., by rescue units from northern Kentucky.
They were identified as:
JAMES STANLEY.
KELLY CARVIN.
CHARLES CASTER.
JOSEPH ROSS.
ABRAHAM WHIGHAM, all of Cincinnati.
Hospital officials said all but ROSS would be treated and released. ROSS was reported in fair condition with unknown injuries.
Police said the collapse was caused by the weight of the men on the roof of the structure.
