Eight Lives Lost and Thirty Wounded in Last Night’s Storm

Dixon, Ky., March 30.-- The most terrific storm that ever invaded this section of the state passed through Webster county Thursday afternoon about 5 o’clock. The storm made its appearance as an ordinary storm, but the clouds soon assumed a light red color with a dark cloud hanging in the centre and funnel shaped. Then a rumbling sound ensued, accompanied by thunder, lightning, hail and rain and the storm burst in its fury. It was about twenty minutes in duration. Eight lives were lost and about thirty wounded, some of whom will die, and about $150,000 of property was destroyed. The track of the storm, as far as known here, began at Black Fork, on the Ohio Valley Railroad, and ended at Sabres, on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. One can ride seventeen miles in the track of the storm without letting down a fence. Housetops, weatherboarding and fence rails are scattered over the country, and it is not an uncommon sight to see all kinds of wearing material in the tops of trees and fastened in the bushes. There are large numbers of horses, cows and hogs killed, and even chickens and geese did not escape. A list of the dead at present ascertained is as follows- GEORGE NEWMAN, MRS. TAYLOR, DICK WILSON, MRS. SHELTON, JOHN TROTTER’S CHILD, MRS. EDWARDS, B.J. HAMMOCK’S CHILD, HENRY PENDERGAST.
