MAN KILLED BY LIGHTNING.

MIDDLESBORO, Ky., July 2. – A violent windstorm last night did immense damage in Powell’s Valley, ten miles from here. Many farm houses were blown down and it is believed full details will bring reports of loss of life. PERRY SMITH and his horse were struck by lightning in the valley and killed during the storm.

Tornado in Kentucky.

Middlesboro, Ky., July 2. – A violent storm, resembling a tornado, wrought havoc across Cumberland Gap, in Powells’ valley. A half dozen small farm houses were demolished, together with a large number of barns. There was some loss of life, but particulars have not been obtained. Perry Smith was killed by lightning. Crops were seriously damaged by the wind in various places.

The path of the storm last night was along Powells river, the farming communities being for the most part visited. Charles Mayhing’s home, a two-story structure was blown down and completely demolished. The inmates escaped. John Winston’s house was partly demolished and his barn blown down. No further loss of life has been reported.
