AT GUTHRIE PEOPLE SEEK THEIR CYCLONE CELLARS IN FEAR OF A TWISTER -- SAND DRIFTS LIKE SNOW AT KINGFISHER -- ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO WORK OUTSIDE AT PITTSBURG, KAN. -- BAD IN THE COUNTRY.

Kansas City, May 11. -- One of the worst sand and dust storms ever known prevailed in Oklahoma and at one or two points in Kansas yesterday.
At Pittsburg, Kan., comparatively no outdoor work could be accomplished. A dust storm blew nearly the entire afternoon, caking everything in its path. The ground is baked, and all crops are suffering for want of rain. Here, as at most points throughout Kansas, Thursday's heated spell was followed by a drop in temperature of nearly 20 degrees.
At Guthrie, O.T., a terrible wind storm from the north struck the town yesterday afternoon and the temperature fell rapidly. The air suddenly became dark with dust and sand and for a time the people sought their cyclone cellars in fear of a twister.
Ten miles northeast of guthrie the storm did assume cyclonic conditions, but nobody was injured.
At Kingfisher, O.T., a sand storm of great vehemance raged from 1 o'clock in the afternoon until late at night. The forenoon had been intensely hot. Shortly after 12 o'clock a norther came up with remarkable suddenness, driving things before it with fearful velocity. For five hours the storm kept up with unabated fury, the temperature during that time falling 37 degrees.
The sand carried before the storm drifted like snow, while the dust and debris caught up made the atmosphere impenetrable and pedestrianism extremely dangerous. It is believed nobody in this vicinity was hurt, though worse reports are likely to come from the country that it is known must have been struck by the storm. The town of Hennessey was also struck, but the extent of the damage suffered there is not known.
