Ottawa, KS Santa Fe Shops Fire, May 1918

The fire loss at the Santa Fe shops at Ottawa the other morning was estimated at ¼ million dollars by local officials. This includes the loss of new car sheds 600 feet long and 110 feet wide just ready to be turned over to the Santa Fe by the Swanson Bros. Construction Company of Topeka. The sheds cost approximately $60,000, it was stated. The fire, which started from an unknown cause a few minutes before midnight, was under control by 3 o'clock in the morning, although the ruins were still burning. The buildings totally destroyed included the new sheds, the 4-story frame office building, storerooms a long frame material shed and a stone material building that was fifty by one hundred and twenty feet. Forty one freight cars on repair tracks were totally destroyed. Considerable loose material was lost.
