Mound Valley, KS fire, Feb 1907

A BIG MOUND VALLEY, KAS., FIRE

Eleven Business Houses Burn - The Loss Probably $30,000.

MOUND VALLEY, KAS., Feb. 5. - Half the business houses of this city, eleven in all, burned at 1 o'clock this morning. The fire originated in Campbell's drug store and burned every building in the block except the buidings occupied by Wise Bros.' general store and the postoffice. These buildings were saved because they were brick. All the buildings burned were wood.

All the merchants with the exception of Campbell, the druggist, saved most of their goods by carrying them into the street. The burned section is on the south side of the street, and the rest of the business section was saved only because the wind was from the north. There was no fire protection. The following firms were burned out: Campbell's drug store; Edwin Huff, drug store; Bushnell's hardware store; James Lear, drug and jewelry store; Reed's meat market; Campbell's barber shop; M. C. Taylor, clothing store; owan's grocery store; Mound Valley hotel; Parks Mercantile company and the Brown telephone office. The loss is about $30,000, mostly covered by insurance.

Mound Valley is in Labette county and is eighteen miles west of Oswego.
