HOWLING HURRICANE.

Unroofing Buildings and Scattering Barns Broadcast---List of Casualties.

LEAVENWORTH, Kan., May 12,----At 11 o'clock this forenoon this city was visited by a fierce tornado that did an immense amount of damage to property, although but one life is reported lost in this city. The storm commenced with a heavy rain and high winds which increased in velocity until it resembled a hurricane. It only damaged three large buildings out of thirty. The first it struck was the Morse school, in which there was a superintendent, twelve teachers and six hundreds scholars. Half of the roof was blown off, and not a single person was hurt.

The second building that was struck was the new market house. The gale struck the north end of this building tearing about forty feet of the roof loose, and scattering it in every direction, killing three horses and dangerously wounding one man, and damaging a stock of hardware to the extent of about $4,000. Two railroad bridges were washed out, one at Eastman, on the Kansas Central, and one at Fairmount, on the Union Pacific. Eight barns were blown down in Salt Creek Valley, eight miles northwest of this city.
