Fort Scott, KS Train Wreck, Aug 1902

WRECKED A 'FRISCO TRAIN.

A Spike Was Driven Between the Switch Rails Near Fort Scott.

Fort Scott, Kas., Aug. 22.-At a point a few miles south of this city last night the 'Frisco Southern limited train out of Kansas City was wrecked. While going past Edwards Junction, at a speed of thirty miles an hour, the engine was turned over and ENGINEER CALKINS and FIREMAN LEVERTON were buried under it. In some way they crawled out from under the wreck, barely injured. The point at which the wreck occurred the Joplin and Cherryvale lines join the main line. Some one who could have had no other purpose than to wreck the train with its load of human freight, drove a spike down between the switch rails, opening the switch about half way. This threw the engine from the track and turned it over in the ditch. The baggage car was thrown across the tracks, but fortunately the passenger cars remained on the track.
