Greensburg, KS School Bus Overturns, Oct 1980

BUS CRASH WITH 21.

Greensburg -- A Greensburg High School bus carrying 21 students returning from a Friday night football game overturned early Saturday about five miles from Greensburg, near the junction of U.S. 54 and U.S. 183.
Four students, the bus driver and a sponsor were injured in the one-vehicle accident as the students were returning from Natoma, Highway Patrol Trooper Jim Stauffer said. They were taken by Greensburg ambulance to Kiowa County Memorial Hospital, Greensburg.
Natoma is about 150 miles northeast of Greensburg.
Stauffer said the bus, driven by MARJORIE SELBY, 39, Greensburg, was southbound on U.S. 183 when it ran off the right side of the road, apparently while MRS. SELBY was adjusting some controls. He said she lost control of the bus when she attempted to bring it back onto the road.
The back end of the bus swung completely around, he said. The bus turned on its side, slid across the highway into the west ditch and rolled 1 1/2 times before coming to rest on its top.
Also injured in the accident were:
PENNY JENKINS, 33, the group's sponsor.
KAREN JOHNSTON, 15.
LAURIE FEINER, 17.
KATHY WILLIAMS, 14.
TANYA WRIGHT, 15.
All are from Greensburg.
MRS. SELBY, MS. JENKINS and JOHNSTON were listed in fair condition at the hospital Saturday night. FEINER, WILLIAMS and WRIGHT were listed in good condition. A hospital spokesman said they had suffered contusions, abrasions and lacerations in the accident.
Other students were treated for their injuries and released Saturday.
