Arrington, KS Auto And Truck Collision, Sep 1949

TWO KILLED IN AUTO CRASH.

Two persons were dead and four were injured, one quite seriously, as the result of a head-on auto-truck collision which occurred Saturday morning about 5:45 o'clock just five miles east of Arrington on Kansas No. 116 highway.
The dead, both colored, were:
MRS. ALBERTA BENTON, 32, Omaha.
IRVIN GRAVES, 32, also of Omaha.
A gravel truck driven by JULIUS TWEATER, Pilot Grove, Mo., and a car driven by ARKANSAS BENTON, 28, colored, of Omaha, apparently smashed head-on in the accident.
TWENTER, the truck driver, suffered serious chest injuries.
The dead were brought to Stanton's mortuary in Atchison. All of the injured were taken to the Holton hospital.
Including TWENTER, the injured were:
ARKANSAS BENTON, driver of the car, who has an injured right leg and cuts and bruises.
VERDIE LEE GRAVES, 32, colored, Omaha, who has cuts and bruises.
PETE PATTERSON, 80, colored, Omaha, who suffered a broken right leg.
The Kansas State Highway patrol and County Coroner Dee Walker, who were on the scene Saturday morning, said the gravel truck overturned and that the entire right side of the Omaha car was crushed. Both vehicles were virtually demolished.
When the gravel truck overturned its contents were scattered over the highway. Traffic was blocked for some time after the accident Saturday morning until the road was cleared.
