Traer, IA Business Building Fire, Mar 1894

PARTICULARS OF THE TRAER FIRE.

Traer, March 31 -- The Star-Clipper building, which was built in 1880, was burned to the ground at 5 a.m. yesterday morning. The fire engine did good work and kept the fire from spreading to other buildings. A small part of G. CANFIELD'S grocery stock was saved, somewhat damaged. Very little of H. BOETTCHER'S stock was burned, yet a greater portion was spoiled by water. JOHN STEFFAN'S stock was most all saved. E. E. TAYLOR'S loss is $8,000; insurance, $4,000. G. CANFIELD'S, $7,500; insurance, $3,500. H. BOETTCHER'S loss, $8,000; insurance, $4,000. The Star-Clipper loses everything unless the books in the safe are all right. The paper had just been issued and about one half of the copies mailed. The paper will issue next Friday as usual. Nothing was saved in the postoffice. The origin of the fire is mysterious. This block is the best and finest building in the city. The postoffice is temporarily located in PORTERFIELD'S store.
