WRECK ON ROCK ISLAND NEAR NICHOLS, IOWA.

CHARLES GIFFEE of Lone Tree, chest injured; probably internally.
J. FISHER of Iowa City, traveling man; bruised.
Eight other persons bruised.
Only two persons were reported injured in a bad wreck of Rock Island passenger train No. 404 on the branch line between Muscatine and Montezuma. The accident occurred about a mile west of Nichols at about 10:30 this morning. The train was eastbound and was due in Muscatine at 11 a.m.
A report from Muscatine says that a defective rail caused the accident. The tender was derailed, and this jerked the baggage car and the coaches off the rails, the smoker and a chair car turning over and falling down the embankment. DR. F. V. MUNESCH and DR. F. F. CARL of Nichols were called to the scene of the accident.
At the headquarters of the Cedar Rapids division the officials were notified by a call from a farm house near the scene of the accident. A short time later a roadmaster sent a telegraphic report in which he said that two coaches had turned on their sides, but that no one was seriously injured.
As it is likely that a number of slight injuries may be reported later, the Rock Island officials summoned the company's physician and he left for the scene of the wreck with the special train which included the wrecking train. Roadmaster C. KELLY and fifteen section laborers were on the train and on arrival these promptly began the work of picking up the wreck.
