Burlington, IA Street Car Wreck, Oct 1901

Fatal Accident at Burlington.

Burlington. Oct. 1. -- An electric car on the west hall line of the Burlington street railway became unmanageable while coming down Valley street hill -- a steep grade -- and dashed into a freight train at the Jefferson street crossing. The brakes and sand box refused to work. MRS. CHARLES KUPFER was killed and several others were injured, none fatally. George W. Stone, a commission man, was the most seriously hurt. The street car company is alone to blame for the crippled condition of the car. The motorman stuck to his post until within ten feet of the moving train.

Davenport Daily Republican, Davenport, IA 2 Oct 1901
