Six People Killed in Rail Wreck

An Illinois Central passenger train went through a bridge at Aplington in Butler county, early yesterday morning, killing six people and injuring many others. We are without details of the accident at the time of going to press other than above. It is supposed the wreck was caused by high waters in the stream weakening the bridge. The injured were taken to Waterloo.

The Nashua Reporter, Nashua, IA 30 May 1918

--------

WATERLOO, Iowa, May 29. Five persons were killed and a dozen injured when Illinois Central passenger train No. 11, westbound, was wrecked near Aplington, thirty miles west of here, this morning.

The wreck occurred at the approach to a bridge over Beaver Creek. The track was weakened by the high water, the locomotive and mail car plunging onto the bank and the combination express and smoker turned over.

The dead:

W. A. Alderman, engineer, Waterloo.

A. F. Golinveaux, fireman, Waterloo.

J. J. Rae, postal mail clerk, Dubuque, Iowa

Two other railway mail clerks, as yet unidentified, were killed.
