Kellogg, IA Tornado, May 1918

A tornado swept over central Iowa about 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in which eleven persons were killed and fifty or sixty more or less injured.

After passing Newton the storm cloud lifted, but came to earth again at a point five miles north Kellogg. Here the twister struck the steadings on the Frank Hummel farm occupied by E. L. Antle and wrecked every building on the place but the dwelling.

Crossing the road to the east it demolished all the buildings on the farm occupied by Neil Turner. Four barns and other out buildings on the D. P. and D. H. Craven farms, orchards, shade trees and fences were blown down and scattered to the four winds, causing a loss of over $25,000. The Guy Adam's residence was unroofed and all the barns, cribs, etc., were wrecked. At the Parmenter and Paul farms nothing was left but the foundations on which the buildings stood.

Those who have followed the path of the storm say that the scene that meets the eye is simply indescribable. It must be seen to get anything like a correct idea of the havoc wrought by the storm.

The Kellogg Enterprise, Kellogg, IA 24 May 1918
