TWO ENGINE CREWS KILLED IN A HEAD-ON COLLISION NEAR GIFFORD, IA.
MANY PASSENGERS INJURED
Light Locomotive Crashes Into a Passenger Train – Engineer of the Former Said to Have Disobeyed Orders
Marshalltown, Ia., Feb. 17. -- Four lives were lost in a head-on collision on the Iowa Central railroad, one mile north of Gifford, when a light engine, northbound, crashed into a passenger train. The dead are:
WALLACE FREW, Keithsburg, Ills, engineer light engine.
JOHN WHITE, Oakaloosa, engineer passenger train.
FRANK PATTON, Marshalltown, fireman, light engine.
ELMER OGLE, Marshalltown, fireman, passenger train.
LAWRENCE J. GEGAN of Chicago, a traveling salesman, was badly bruised about the hips. A number of other passengers were slightly injured. Engineer FREW of the light engine should have cleared the passenger train at Gifford, but failed to do so.
