Washout Wrecks El Paso Limited on Rock Island Route

Muscatine, Ia., Aug. 18.- The El Paso limited on the Rock Island was wrecked by a washout a mile west of Letts early this morning. Five coaches and the engine were thrown into a ditch. The train carried a heavy passenger list. May are reported injured. The washout was caused by a cloudburst.

WASHOUT CAUSES WRECK

But Passengers Escape With Few Minor Bruises.

Muscatine, Ia., Aug. 18 - The El Paso limited on the Rock Island was wrecked in a washout early this morning. It is stated by officials of the Rock Island that the baggage, mail, express and two chair cars were ditched. No one was seriously injured.
The washout was caused by a cloudburst, accompanied by a terrific electrical storm. Two houses in the adjacent country are reported burned by lighting [sic] and much other damage done.
No one was fatally injured in the wreck near Letts today. The mail clerk and porter were seriously hurt. The passengers escaped with minor injuries.
