BRIDGE COLLAPSE KILLS ENGINEER.

Mapleton, Ia. (AP) -- A highway bridge collapsed while engineers were inspecting it Friday and a highway commission engineer was fatally injured.
He was CARL Y. SERNSTROM, 62, resident engineer at Sioux City.
Dr. S. N. Anderson, Monona county coroner, said SERNSTROM was plunged into the river when the steel and concrete span fell. A large piece of rock crushed SERNSTROM'S chest and skull, the coroner said.
The bridge spans the north branch of the Soldier River on highway 141 between Mapleton and Ute.
Heavy rains and high water earlier this week had undermined the span.
Five other highway commission employes who were on the bridge when it collapsed were unhurt.
Two men who were inspecting piling under the bridge heard it start to fall and ran clear.
