Ralston, IA Train Hits Buggy, Sep 1902

KILLED AT CROSSING.

NORTHWESTERN ENGINE STRIKES BUGGY IN WHICH WERE TWO PERSONS.

A Glidden special says:
A terrible tragedy happened at Rich crossing, half a mile west of Ralston, a few miles east of this place, Sunday night, when the Northwestern passenger train No. 6, in charge of Conductor MODALOND, struck a team and buggy and almost instantly killed the two occupants, WILLIAM HOWARD and MISS MAUDE SOLT. MISS SOLT was carried into Ralston on the pilot of the engine.
Her skull was fractured, but otherwise she was not badly maimed. She was dead when taken from the engine. HOWARD was found quite a distance from the crossing, where the rig was struck. He was alive, but unconscious and died an hour later.
The train was running at terrific speed when the accident occurred and did not or could not stop until Ralston was reached.
