Oakville, IA Grain Elevator Explosion, June 1964
TWO INJURED IN OAKVILLE EXPLOSION.
Oakville, Ia. -- Two men were hurt and undetermined damage caused to the Meeker Landing elevator by an explosion and fire which occurred about 10:30 a.m. today.
MELVIN ROCKKEMMER of Oakville, assistant manager of the elevator, suffered first and second degree burns and a possible concussion. He was taken to the Burlington hospital for treatment.
BILL HAINES of Kingston also was injured. He was treated at the ospital and later released. RECKKEMMER remained at the hospital.
The two men were reported working in a pump pit below the elevator office, where the explosion occurred.
Cause of the blast was not determined immediately.
Members of the Mediapolis Fire Department were summoned to extinguish a fire started by the explosion.
Force of the blast was reported to have been sufficient to blow out windows of the elevator, which is owned by the Farmers Grain Dealers Assn. and has a capacity of 250,000 bushels of grain. There were no reports of damage to stored soybeans and corn.
The elevator is located about 10 miles south of Oakville.
