WAS A BAD WRECK.

GRAVEL TRAIN RAN INTO STOCK TRAIN AT DOWS SATURDAY.

SEVENTY HEAD OF STOCK KILLED.

PART OF STOCK TRAIN ON BRANCH AND PART ON MAIN LINE. THREE CARS TELESCOPED.

Dows, Iowa -- Last Saturday evening the stock train going south on the Rock Island was struck by a gravel train at about midnight and 42 head of cattle and 30 head of sheep were killed. None of the train crews were hurt. It seems the stock train was taking water with part of the train on the main line and part on the branch line. The gravel train came around the bend on the branch line which is down grade, and as the train was beyond control, struck the stock train in the middle. The engine of the gravel train plowed into three cars leaving death in its trail. Engine finally fell over on its side and killed many more. Engineer J. DUNHAM and Fireman ARCHIBALD were in the gravel train engine. THey jumped and no one was hurt. Conductor McAFFEE was in charge of the gravel train. Engineer CHAS. STEADMAN and Conductor C. E. MEADOWS were in charge of the stock train. The blame seems to be attributed to the handling of the gravel train although Engineer DUNHAM says he did everything possible to control the gravel train and avoid a collision.
